The National Museum Wales – Cardiff
Situated right in the heart of Cardiff, The National Museum Wales is one of the top museums and art galleries in the country. Within the museum, there is a spectacular art gallery which features sculptures, paintings, drawings and ceramics from not just Wales, but around the world. They cover 500 years of history, and the gallery is especially renowned as having one of the best collections of impressionist works in Europe.
Martin Tinney Gallery – Cardiff
Another gallery you’ll want to check out if you are staying in the Cardiff area, is the Martin Tinney Gallery. Its founder, Martin Tinney, left a career in medicine to open up the gallery in Windsor Place. However, the gallery has since moved just a short distance away onto St Andrews Crescent.
The gallery is set over three storeys in a beautiful 19th century townhouse. It focuses on celebrating Welsh art, displaying work from both prominent and up and coming artists. You’ll find a stunning selection of contemporary and 20th century art. Some of the artists which have featured displays at the gallery include Ceri Richards, Harry Holland and Sir Cedric Morris.
Fountain Fine Art – Llandeilo
Travel a little further west into Llandeilo, and you’ll find the brilliant Fountain Fine Art. Richard Blaine established the gallery in 1989, and it has gone on to develop a remarkable reputation for its collection of national and local artists. It became so successful, it even opened up another branch in Cardiff in 2012.
It features a rolling program which regularly sees sculptures, drawings and paintings hosted at numerous exhibition events. If you’re in the area, you’ll definitely want to check out this impressive gallery.
Plas Glyn y Weddw – Pwllheli
In Pwllheli, North Wales, lies the Plas Gyn y Weddw gallery. Once a dower house, this 1856 building is now a fascinating art gallery. It was specifically built to house the very private collection of Lady Elizabeth Love Jones-Parry from the Madryn Estate.
Today, you can view ten generously spacious galleries, situated within the stunning beam roof of this Gothic style mansion. It is home to some of the finest art in Wales and it also regularly hosts talks, concerts and workshops. While it largely shows artwork from established artists, the gallery also features selected works from up and coming local artists in its yearly Summer Exhibition.
