TY CARTHEN (Llandudno)

When we founded Great Little Places, social media was still waiting for Mark Zuckerberg and Facebook to come along and light the blue touchpaper. Now everyone is posting marks out of 10 for everything from how hot their coffee was to how cool their hotel room is. We, of course, have been doing this kind of thing from the start in our own special way, looking for places that come out tops. Which is why we were delighted to find Tŷ Carthen. Needles and haystacks come to mind here, for there are lots of B&Bs in Llandudno. It’s run by Deborah and Mark Albrow and, boy, do they know what floats the boat of today’s guests.

Tŷ Carthen is immaculate and imaginative, full of arty touches that take it to a different level from traditional (and sometimes tired) seaside B&Bs. The late-Georgian house stands in a quiet, leafy terrace on the side of Llandudno’s Great Orme headland, just five minutes from the promenade. Deborah and Mark have worked wonders with the fabric of the Grade II-listed building, retaining original features like slate fireplaces, wood panelling and plasterwork but placing them in a modern context.

Unlike some so-called ‘boutique’ accommodation, which can be arch, frosty and self-conscious, the overall effect here is warm, natural and relaxing – which is just the way Deborah and Mark want it to be. You get an immediate impression that they are rooted in the area, and want to share it with you. But as well as lots of local knowledge, there’s also accommodation that reflects a strong ‘sense of place’ through the use of original Welsh artworks, textiles and locally sourced produce (the breakfasts are so good that they may well turn out to be the highlight of your day). The ‘bed’ bit exemplary too – the lovely bedrooms have beautifully comfy beds and luxury toiletries.
