This 16th-century traditional longhouse with links to Roman Anglesey and the medieval Welsh princes has been lovingly restored and discreetly modernised by your enterprising hosts Prydwen and Emyr Parry. It retains a wealth of original character in its recent reincarnation as a small luxury country hotel. The rooms – including two suites – are delightfully varied and individually styled, a skilful blend of modern and traditional (TVs/DVDs, Jacquard linen, WiFi and fluffy towels). Lavish breakfasts come courtesy of Prydwen, who trained at the legendary Ballymaloe Irish cookery school. Easily accessible yet tucked away in its own 25 acres, Cleifiog Uchaf stands in an exceptional historic location that is taking new shape and life – work in progress includes the renovation of the original Walled Garden.
