BRYN TYRCH INN (Capel Curig)

Snowdonia has made quite a name for itself as the outdoor activity playground of Wales in recent years. It’s a buzzing, yet breath-takingly beautiful place to stay and play. Neil and Rachel Roberts, whose family have owned Bryn Tyrch for decades, and their friendly management team headed up by Steve and Caroline Taylor, are part of that renaissance. The days of a pie and pint before heading for your tent are long gone, and today’s fresh air fans love a little luxury at the end of a day in the mountains. Its delivered here in top quality and the regularly changing Welsh cask ales brings real beer devotees from afar.

The peaceful setting of ‘the Bryn’, or The Hill, with its views of Mount Siabod and the iconic Snowdon Horseshoe and the clear water of the Afon Llugwy opposite the front door only add to the rugged drama. From the DNA of the menus and what’s pouring on the bar, to the blankets on your bed and the jam with breakfast, local sourcing is taken seriously. The cooking is of an arrestingly high standard, we loved the daily changing Specials board.

There are 12 comfy en-suite bedrooms, with contemporary colour palettes, perfect beds and excellent modern bathrooms. If a long hot soak is what you need after a climb to the highest point in Wales, ask for one of their Superior rooms with a tub. Great use of exposed stone and tactile wood finishes, and high-end wall coverings and soft furnishings add to the pervading sense of place.

Downstairs the dining room makes the most of those views, there’s plenty of cosy corners to relax with a book or a coffee, and the ancient stone walls seem to both radiate the warmth from the open fire, and the cheerful laughter and happy chatter of guests and staff. It’s a healing space to be in.

Situated in the heart of the Snowdonia National Park, in the village of Capel Curig, Bryn Tyrch is in easy reach of the many mountain ranges, bike trails and must do activities of Zip World and Surf Snowdonia.
